Properties

What kind of pose this is

An extension posture that opens the front of the body and loads the spinal extensors. Backbends are stimulating rather than calming, and are the pose family most often overdone.

Hold: Hold for about 30 seconds. Beginners should build up to this rather than starting there; come out early if the breath becomes ragged.

🧭
Preparation

How to do Fish Pose

  1. Warm the spine first — never enter a deep backbend cold.
  2. Establish the foundation (feet, hands or forearms) and press down actively.
  3. Lengthen the spine before you extend it; think 'long, then back', never 'back' alone.
  4. Engage the gluteals and lower abdominals to protect the lumbar spine.
  5. Open the chest and upper back rather than hinging at one lumbar segment.
  6. Come out slowly and follow with a neutral or gently flexed counter-pose — never an immediate deep forward fold.
  7. A developing-level shape. Build the hold time gradually rather than deepening the shape.

Health benefits

What this pose is for

  • Opens the chest and front of the shoulders, countering desk posture
  • Strengthens the spinal extensors and the gluteals
  • Increases thoracic mobility, which improves breathing capacity
  • Stimulating and mood-lifting — traditionally used for low energy and low mood
  • Siddha / Varma note: Traditional Siddha-Varma associates spinal extension with the chest and back-line pathways; traditional context only, not medical guidance.

Contraindications

Who should not practise this

Do not practise Fish Pose if:
  • you have acute low-back pain, spondylolisthesis or a diagnosed disc problem in its painful phase
  • you have had spinal, abdominal, cardiac or shoulder surgery within 6 months and have not been cleared
  • you are pregnant beyond the first trimester — deep backbends are not appropriate
  • you have uncontrolled high blood pressure or a recent cardiac event
  • you have sacroiliac instability or a recent rib fracture

Clinical contraindications

  • Acute low-back pain or spondylolisthesis
  • Disc herniation in the acute phase
  • Recent spinal, abdominal, cardiac or shoulder surgery
  • Uncontrolled hypertension
  • Late pregnancy (deep backbends stress the linea alba)
  • Sacroiliac instability

Side effects & what people commonly feel

  • Lumbar compression ache if the extension came from the low back only
  • Wrist strain in hand-supported variants
  • Neck discomfort if the head is dropped back without support
  • Over-stimulation and difficulty sleeping if practised late at night
Applies to every pose on this site. Never practise into sharp, shooting or joint-line pain — muscular stretch is acceptable, joint pain is not. If you are pregnant, recovering from surgery or illness, or managing any diagnosed condition, get clearance from your doctor or physiotherapist before beginning, and tell your teacher. Post-surgical timelines given here are typical guidance only — your own surgeon's instruction always overrides them.

SEGA AI Judge System

How the AI scores this pose

The SEGA AI Judge System uses a movement-responsive scanning engine — the scoring window opens the moment the system detects the athlete entering the posture, not on an arbitrary countdown. For Fish Pose, the scanning trigger works as follows:

▸ AI Scanning Trigger — Reference ASANA-STD-100
Scoring initialises at the held apex; the AI tracks even segmental extension, shoulder opening and hip drive, flagging lumbar hinging.

Once the trigger fires, the AI evaluates Execution (form geometry), Stability (centre-of-gravity control across the 30-second hold) and Difficulty (multiplied by the SEGA Tariff of 3.0) to produce the final score. The full tamper-evident record is written to the SEGA World Ranking archive.
