Formal academic work by Prof. Master Segar Guru on the integration of Siddha medicine, Varma therapy and yoga — peer-reviewed at AICSM 2025 (AIMST University) and presented at Universiti Malaya's International Tamil Siddhar Tradition Conference 2026.

Programme Overview

Bridging ancient wisdom & modern clinical measurement

The research arm of the SEGA Intercontinental Yoga Alliance, led by Prof. Master Segar Guru, examines how traditional Tamil Siddha wisdom — specifically Varma therapy and Vethathiri Maharishi's Simplified Physical Exercises — interacts with modern yoga asanas and measurable clinical outcomes. Every study is conducted at established Ministry of Health–recognised clinical locations, with formal patient consent and independent institutional support. Findings are submitted to accredited academic conferences rather than published as marketing claims — a standard that keeps the work honest, verifiable, and useful to the wider medical and traditional-medicine community.

A New Approach to Healing: An Integrative Therapeutic Protocol Combining Varma Therapy and Vethathiri Maharishi Yoga for Holistic Patient Recovery — A Clinical Case Study

Segar. (2025). Proceedings of the AIMST International Conference on Siddha Medicine (AICSM 2025), pp. 98–99. AIMST University, Malaysia. Reference: OP223.
Background: Integrative healthcare models are gaining acceptance. Varma Kalai (Siddha therapy), Vethathiri Maharishi Yoga (SKY Yoga), and modern yoga asanas are potent modalities, but research on their synergistic application is sparse. This paper presents a clinical case study from the MHHO clinic (Kuala Lumpur) and other locations detailing a novel integrative protocol for holistic recovery.

Case Presentation: This report describes a patient presenting with chronic musculoskeletal pain, frozen shoulder, and knee pain. The patient had significant functional limitations and pain, having failed previous treatments.

Intervention: The multi-week protocol included practitioner-administered Varma therapy (targeting vital energy points) complemented by a patient-led daily regimen of Vethathiri Maharishi Yoga (Simplified Physical Exercises), other yoga asanas, and emotional regulation techniques.

Progress Monitoring: Baseline and follow-up assessments were conducted. Efficacy was quantified using the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) for pain, goniometric measurement for Range of Motion (ROM), and manual testing for muscle strength.

Outcomes: The patient demonstrated significant, multi-dimensional improvements. This included a marked reduction in patient-reported pain (VAS scores), enhanced physical mobility and function (ROM), and substantial improvements in psychological well-being (reduced anxiety, enhanced quality of life).

Conclusion: This case study provides preliminary evidence for the efficacy and safety of an integrative protocol combining Varma therapy, SKY Yoga, and other asanas. The synergistic effects suggest a powerful model that shifts patients from passive treatment to active self-empowerment. This holistic approach is promising for complex chronic conditions, though larger-scale research is required to validate these findings.

Efficacy of Integrative Siddha and Yoga Protocols in Type 2 Diabetes Management

Prof. Master Segar Guru. (2026). Presented at the International Tamil Siddhar Tradition Conference, Universiti Malaya, Kuala Lumpur (27 February – 1 March 2026). Track: Siddhar Anthropology / Sciences. Full paper pending peer-review and publication.
Study aim. This observational study documented the impact of a structured integrative programme — combining traditional Varma therapy with Vethathiri Maharishi Yoga (Simplified Physical Exercises) and complementary yoga asanas — on adults living with Type 2 Diabetes. The goal was to observe measurable change across a defined observation window, not to prescribe or replace conventional diabetes care.

Setting. The study was conducted at MHHO Centre (Kuala Lumpur), a recognised traditional and complementary medicine (T&CM) clinical location, with participants consenting to standardised baseline and follow-up measurements. Conventional diabetes medications prescribed by participants' regular healthcare providers were maintained throughout the study; the integrative protocol was positioned strictly as an adjunctive wellness programme, never as a replacement for prescribed medical treatment.

What was documented. Baseline blood glucose readings were taken at the start of each participant's observation period. Follow-up readings were taken after the completion of the structured integrative session, and again across the multi-week observation window. Additional wellness markers documented included blood pressure, self-reported energy and mood, and participants' subjective sense of well-being. All measurements were recorded in a standardised participant log.

General observations. Across the participant group, the majority demonstrated measurable improvements in the recorded glucose readings between the baseline session and follow-up sessions during the observation window. Several participants also reported subjective improvements in energy, sleep quality and general well-being. As with any observational study, individual responses varied — one participant showed limited change, which the study reports honestly as part of the findings. The study frames these results as observational documentation, not as clinical evidence of a therapeutic claim.

Conclusion. The findings support the value of continued observational and controlled research into how integrative Siddha and yoga programmes may complement conventional Type 2 Diabetes care as a supportive wellness pathway. The study explicitly calls for larger, longer-term, randomised controlled research before any therapeutic claim can be established. It does not recommend that any participant discontinue prescribed diabetes medication, and it does not present the protocol as a cure, reversal or medical treatment.

Important note. This is an observational research summary. It is not medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. Anyone living with diabetes should continue with prescribed medication and consult their qualified healthcare professional before making any changes to their care. The SEGA Intercontinental Yoga Alliance does not offer this programme as a cure or reversal of Type 2 Diabetes; it is a supportive wellness pathway alongside conventional care.
Research Framework

How SEGA approaches integrative research

Every SEGA-affiliated study follows the same three-part discipline — regardless of whether the outcome is musculoskeletal recovery, wellness support for chronic conditions, or the underlying biomechanical basis of Siddha therapy. The intent is to build a serious, verifiable body of evidence, one honest study at a time.

1. Recognised clinical location All studies are conducted at established clinical or T&CM-recognised centres — including MHHO Centre in Kuala Lumpur — with proper participant consent, documented protocol, and standardised measurement.
2. Objective measurement Each study uses validated measurement tools — goniometer for Range of Motion, VAS for pain, standardised blood glucose meters — so results can be verified independently and compared against future studies.
3. Academic submission Findings are submitted to accredited academic conferences and peer-reviewed proceedings, not published as marketing claims. This protects patients, participants and the reputation of the practice.
Why this matters

Traditional Tamil Siddha medicine has a two-thousand-year documented lineage. Vethathiri Maharishi's Simplified Physical Exercises and Varma Kalai therapy have transformed countless lives across generations. But when a modern healthcare system — or a modern federation — is asked to recognise these approaches, anecdote is not enough. The SEGA research programme exists to translate lived experience into measurable outcomes, one honest study at a time, so that the wider medical, academic and yoga sport communities can engage with the tradition on their own terms.
