Properties

What kind of pose this is

A flexion posture that lengthens the whole posterior chain. Forward folds are calming to the nervous system and are the classic counter-pose to backbending.

Hold: Hold for about 30 seconds. Beginners should build up to this rather than starting there; come out early if the breath becomes ragged.

🧭
Preparation

How to do Half Split

  1. Set the pelvis first — tilt forward from the hip joint, not from the waist.
  2. Keep a soft micro-bend in the knees; straight legs are a result, never a starting instruction.
  3. Lengthen the front of the spine on the inhale.
  4. Fold a little further on the exhale, only as far as the spine stays long.
  5. Let the head and neck hang heavy once you have arrived.
  6. Come up with a rounded spine and bent knees, or bring the hands to the thighs for support.
  7. A developing-level shape. Build the hold time gradually rather than deepening the shape.

Musculature

Which part of the body works

Supporting musclesSpinal erectors (eccentric control), hip flexors (concentric)
Joints loadedHip flexion primarily; lumbar spine must stay long, not rounded under load

Health benefits

What this pose is for

  • Lengthens hamstrings and calves and relieves posterior-chain tightness
  • Calms the nervous system — forward folding reliably lowers arousal
  • Gently decompresses the lumbar spine when done from the hips
  • Improves hip-hinge mechanics, which protects the back in daily lifting
  • Siddha / Varma note: Traditional Siddha-Varma associates forward folding with the back-line pathways; traditional context only, not medical guidance.

Contraindications

Who should not practise this

Do not practise Half Split if:
  • you have a diagnosed disc herniation or sciatica with pain travelling down the leg
  • you have osteoporosis or osteopenia with fracture risk — loaded spinal flexion is one of the few genuinely contraindicated movements
  • you have glaucoma, retinal detachment risk or uncontrolled high blood pressure (for deep head-below-heart folds)
  • you are in the second or third trimester of pregnancy — modify with wide feet and never compress the belly
  • you have had abdominal or spinal surgery in the last 3–6 months without surgical clearance

Clinical contraindications

  • Acute disc herniation or sciatica with leg symptoms
  • Uncontrolled high blood pressure or glaucoma in deep head-down folds
  • Late pregnancy (fold with feet wide, never compressing the abdomen)
  • Acute hamstring tear
  • Osteoporosis with vertebral fracture risk — spinal flexion is specifically contraindicated

Side effects & what people commonly feel

  • A pulling sensation behind the knees
  • Head rush on standing up too quickly
  • Low-back ache if the fold came from the spine rather than the hips
Applies to every pose on this site. Never practise into sharp, shooting or joint-line pain — muscular stretch is acceptable, joint pain is not. If you are pregnant, recovering from surgery or illness, or managing any diagnosed condition, get clearance from your doctor or physiotherapist before beginning, and tell your teacher. Post-surgical timelines given here are typical guidance only — your own surgeon's instruction always overrides them.

SEGA AI Judge System

How the AI scores this pose

The SEGA AI Judge System uses a movement-responsive scanning engine — the scoring window opens the moment the system detects the athlete entering the posture, not on an arbitrary countdown. For Half Split, the scanning trigger works as follows:

▸ AI Scanning Trigger — Reference ASANA-STD-172
Scoring initialises at maximum controlled flexion; the AI tracks spinal length, pelvic tilt and leg engagement rather than depth alone.

Once the trigger fires, the AI evaluates Execution (form geometry), Stability (centre-of-gravity control across the 30-second hold) and Difficulty (multiplied by the SEGA Tariff of 3.0) to produce the final score. The full tamper-evident record is written to the SEGA World Ranking archive.
