Properties

What kind of pose this is

A grounding, weight-bearing posture. Standing poses build the base of every practice — they load the legs and feet, train alignment from the ground up, and are where posture is actually corrected.

Hold: Hold for about 30 seconds. Beginners should build up to this rather than starting there; come out early if the breath becomes ragged.

🧭
Preparation

How to do Mountain Pose

  1. Stand at the top of the mat, feet hip-width, weight even across both feet.
  2. Ground down through the big toe mound, little toe mound and heel — three points, equal pressure.
  3. Lengthen the spine upward; draw the lower ribs gently in so the ribcage sits over the pelvis.
  4. Move into the shape slowly, keeping the standing leg active and the kneecap lifted.
  5. Set the arms and gaze last, once the base is stable.
  6. Hold with steady nasal breathing; come out with the same control you went in with.
  7. This is a foundation-level shape. If anything hurts, you have gone too far — the pose is meant to be sustainable.

Health benefits

What this pose is for

  • Builds leg and hip strength and improves standing balance
  • Trains postural alignment and proprioception
  • Loads bone through the legs and hips, which supports bone density
  • Improves ankle and foot stability, reducing everyday trip risk
  • Steadies attention — standing work is where concentration is trained
  • Siddha / Varma note: Activates the Uchi (crown) pathway and establishes grounding meridian flows through the lower extremities.

Contraindications

Who should not practise this

Do not practise Mountain Pose if:
  • you have an acute (currently painful) ankle, knee or hip injury
  • you have had a knee or hip replacement in the last 3–6 months and have not been cleared by your surgeon or physiotherapist
  • you have a lower-limb fracture that has not fully healed
  • you experience vertigo or unexplained dizziness that has not been investigated

Clinical contraindications

  • Acute ankle, knee or hip injury
  • Uncontrolled vertigo or balance disorder
  • Recent lower-limb fracture or joint replacement without clearance
  • Severe uncontrolled hypertension for long holds

Side effects & what people commonly feel

  • Leg fatigue and next-day soreness, especially in the outer hip
  • Light-headedness if the breath is held or the hold is too long
  • Knee discomfort if the knee is allowed to roll inward past the ankle
Applies to every pose on this site. Never practise into sharp, shooting or joint-line pain — muscular stretch is acceptable, joint pain is not. If you are pregnant, recovering from surgery or illness, or managing any diagnosed condition, get clearance from your doctor or physiotherapist before beginning, and tell your teacher. Post-surgical timelines given here are typical guidance only — your own surgeon's instruction always overrides them.

SEGA AI Judge System

How the AI scores this pose

The SEGA AI Judge System uses a movement-responsive scanning engine — the scoring window opens the moment the system detects the athlete entering the posture, not on an arbitrary countdown. For Mountain Pose, the scanning trigger works as follows:

▸ AI Scanning Trigger — Reference ASANA-STD-001
Bilateral symmetry check initiates stability tracking the millisecond plantar surface weight distribution reaches equilibrium. Replaces blind countdowns.

Once the trigger fires, the AI evaluates Execution (form geometry), Stability (centre-of-gravity control across the 30-second hold) and Difficulty (multiplied by the SEGA Tariff of 2.0) to produce the final score. The full tamper-evident record is written to the SEGA World Ranking archive.
