Properties

What kind of pose this is

A posture targeting the hip joint capsule, external rotators and adductors. Hip openers are slow, often uncomfortable, and are where stored tension most reliably surfaces.

Hold: Hold for about 10 seconds. Beginners should build up to this rather than starting there; come out early if the breath becomes ragged.

🧭
Preparation

How to do Split

  1. Warm the hips with gentle circles or a few rounds of movement before holding anything.
  2. Set the pelvis level and square before introducing the hip position.
  3. Enter the shape gradually and stop at the first firm resistance, not at pain.
  4. Support the pose with blocks, blankets or a bolster wherever the floor is far away.
  5. Breathe into the sensation for the full hold — hips respond to time, not force.
  6. Exit slowly and move the joint gently afterwards to reintegrate it.
  7. An elite competition-level shape. It should only be practised by trained athletes under direct supervision, on a warm body, with the prerequisites genuinely established. Attempting this from a video is how people get hurt.

Health benefits

What this pose is for

  • Increases hip range of motion, which reduces compensatory low-back movement
  • Releases the deep external rotators, often easing sciatic-type referred tension
  • Improves sitting comfort and cross-legged sitting for meditation
  • Traditionally associated with releasing held emotional tension
  • Siddha / Varma note: Traditional Siddha-Varma associates hip work with the pelvic energy region; traditional context only, not medical guidance.

Contraindications

Who should not practise this

Do not practise Split if:
  • you have a diagnosed hip labral tear or impingement (FAI) — deep external rotation is specifically contraindicated
  • you have had a hip replacement and have not been cleared; most surgeons restrict deep flexion, adduction and internal rotation permanently
  • you have a knee ligament or meniscus injury — the knee takes the strain in most hip openers
  • you are pregnant and going deep into adductor stretches — relaxin makes over-stretching easy and injury slow to heal
  • you have an acute groin or hamstring strain
  • you do not have a qualified teacher present — at difficulty level 5 this shape is not safe to learn alone

Clinical contraindications

  • Hip labral tear or femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) — external rotation can worsen both
  • Hip replacement without surgical clearance
  • Acute groin strain
  • Knee ligament or meniscus injury
  • Late pregnancy for deep adductor work (relaxin increases injury risk)

Side effects & what people commonly feel

  • Deep aching in the buttock during and after
  • Knee pain if the knee is loaded instead of the hip
  • Emotional release — well documented and normal
Applies to every pose on this site. Never practise into sharp, shooting or joint-line pain — muscular stretch is acceptable, joint pain is not. If you are pregnant, recovering from surgery or illness, or managing any diagnosed condition, get clearance from your doctor or physiotherapist before beginning, and tell your teacher. Post-surgical timelines given here are typical guidance only — your own surgeon's instruction always overrides them.

SEGA AI Judge System

How the AI scores this pose

The SEGA AI Judge System uses a movement-responsive scanning engine — the scoring window opens the moment the system detects the athlete entering the posture, not on an arbitrary countdown. For Split, the scanning trigger works as follows:

▸ AI Scanning Trigger — Reference ASANA-STD-171
Scoring initialises in the held opening; the AI tracks pelvic alignment and joint angle within a safe range.

Once the trigger fires, the AI evaluates Execution (form geometry), Stability (centre-of-gravity control across the 10-second hold) and Difficulty (multiplied by the SEGA Tariff of 9.0) to produce the final score. The full tamper-evident record is written to the SEGA World Ranking archive.
