Properties

What kind of pose this is

A rotational posture through the spine. Twists mobilise the thoracic spine, massage the abdominal organs, and are traditionally read as digestive and detoxifying.

Hold: Hold for about 30 seconds. Beginners should build up to this rather than starting there; come out early if the breath becomes ragged.

🧭
Preparation

How to do Supine Spinal Twist

  1. Lengthen the spine fully before rotating — a twist on a compressed spine is where injury happens.
  2. Ground the base (sitting bones or feet) evenly and keep it still.
  3. Rotate on the exhale, starting from the navel and travelling upward.
  4. Let the ribcage and shoulders follow the abdomen; the head turns last.
  5. Use the hands to support, never to crank yourself further than the spine offers.
  6. Unwind slowly on an inhale and repeat on the other side for the same duration.
  7. This is a foundation-level shape. If anything hurts, you have gone too far — the pose is meant to be sustainable.

Health benefits

What this pose is for

  • Improves thoracic rotation, which most desk-bound bodies have lost
  • Traditionally aids digestion and relieves bloating
  • Relieves mid-back and rib tension
  • Improves rotational capacity needed for sport and everyday reaching
  • Siddha / Varma note: Traditional Siddha-Varma associates twists with the abdominal and spinal region; traditional context only, not medical guidance.

Contraindications

Who should not practise this

Do not practise Supine Spinal Twist if:
  • you have a diagnosed disc herniation or sciatica in its acute phase
  • you are pregnant — practise only open twists away from the belly, never closed ones
  • you have had abdominal, hernia or spinal surgery in the last 3–6 months without clearance
  • you have sacroiliac joint instability
  • you have a recent rib fracture or costochondritis

Clinical contraindications

  • Acute disc herniation
  • Sacroiliac joint instability
  • Recent abdominal or spinal surgery
  • Pregnancy — closed/deep twists compressing the abdomen are contraindicated (open twists only)
  • Acute IBD flare or recent hernia repair

Side effects & what people commonly feel

  • Rib or intercostal soreness
  • Sacroiliac ache if the pelvis was allowed to rotate with the spine
  • Dizziness if the head is turned too fast
Applies to every pose on this site. Never practise into sharp, shooting or joint-line pain — muscular stretch is acceptable, joint pain is not. If you are pregnant, recovering from surgery or illness, or managing any diagnosed condition, get clearance from your doctor or physiotherapist before beginning, and tell your teacher. Post-surgical timelines given here are typical guidance only — your own surgeon's instruction always overrides them.

SEGA AI Judge System

How the AI scores this pose

The SEGA AI Judge System uses a movement-responsive scanning engine — the scoring window opens the moment the system detects the athlete entering the posture, not on an arbitrary countdown. For Supine Spinal Twist, the scanning trigger works as follows:

▸ AI Scanning Trigger — Reference ASANA-STD-111
Scoring initialises in the held rotation; the AI tracks a stable pelvis, spinal length and even thoracic rotation.

Once the trigger fires, the AI evaluates Execution (form geometry), Stability (centre-of-gravity control across the 30-second hold) and Difficulty (multiplied by the SEGA Tariff of 2.0) to produce the final score. The full tamper-evident record is written to the SEGA World Ranking archive.
