Properties

What kind of pose this is

A single-point or reduced-base posture. Balance work is a nervous-system skill before it is a strength skill — it trains the ankle, the vestibular system and the eye together.

Hold: Hold for about 30 seconds. Beginners should build up to this rather than starting there; come out early if the breath becomes ragged.

🧭
Preparation

How to do Tree Pose

  1. Establish a fixed gaze point (drishti) at eye level before you move — this is the single biggest determinant of whether you will hold it.
  2. Ground the standing foot fully; spread the toes and keep them soft rather than gripping.
  3. Shift weight onto the standing leg completely before lifting the other.
  4. Lift and place slowly; never rush the transition.
  5. Find the shape, then soften the jaw and breathe.
  6. Come down deliberately — most balance injuries happen on the exit, not the hold.
  7. A developing-level shape. Build the hold time gradually rather than deepening the shape.

Musculature

Health benefits

What this pose is for

  • Trains proprioception and reduces fall risk — one of the best-evidenced benefits of yoga in older adults
  • Strengthens the ankle complex and the lateral hip
  • Improves focus and single-task attention
  • Builds confidence in single-leg loading, useful for running and stair work
  • Siddha / Varma note: Concentrated pressure on the inner thigh activates localized circulatory pathways and Kumbhaka stabilizing nodes.

Contraindications

Who should not practise this

Do not practise Tree Pose if:
  • you have vertigo, an inner-ear condition or unexplained dizziness
  • you have significant numbness in the feet (for example from diabetic neuropathy) — practise at a wall instead
  • you are within 3 months of lower-limb surgery, or longer if your surgeon says so
  • you are at high fracture risk and have nobody nearby — use a wall or chair, never practise unsupported

Clinical contraindications

  • Acute vertigo, labyrinthitis or unmanaged inner-ear disorder
  • Acute ankle sprain
  • Severe peripheral neuropathy with loss of foot sensation
  • Recent lower-limb surgery without clearance

Side effects & what people commonly feel

  • Wobbling and frustration — normal, and the point of the pose
  • Ankle or arch fatigue
  • Cramping in the foot if the toes grip
Applies to every pose on this site. Never practise into sharp, shooting or joint-line pain — muscular stretch is acceptable, joint pain is not. If you are pregnant, recovering from surgery or illness, or managing any diagnosed condition, get clearance from your doctor or physiotherapist before beginning, and tell your teacher. Post-surgical timelines given here are typical guidance only — your own surgeon's instruction always overrides them.

Functional Biomechanics

The mechanics of the pose

Unilateral balance requiring external hip rotation and core stabilization.

SEGA AI Judge System

How the AI scores this pose

The SEGA AI Judge System uses a movement-responsive scanning engine — the scoring window opens the moment the system detects the athlete entering the posture, not on an arbitrary countdown. For Tree Pose, the scanning trigger works as follows:

▸ AI Scanning Trigger — Reference ASANA-STD-002
System dynamically scans and initiates scoring the moment the lifted foot makes contact with the inner thigh, requiring a 180-degree lock on the standing leg.

Once the trigger fires, the AI evaluates Execution (form geometry), Stability (centre-of-gravity control across the 30-second hold) and Difficulty (multiplied by the SEGA Tariff of 3.0) to produce the final score. The full tamper-evident record is written to the SEGA World Ranking archive.

Which vital points this pose activates

Master Segar’s Siddha lineage teaches that every asana affects specific vital points and energy pathways in the body. This is the traditional understanding of Tree Pose according to Varma Kalai and Siddha medicine.

Vital Point Stimulation
Concentrated pressure on the inner thigh activates localized circulatory pathways and Kumbhaka stabilizing nodes.

Critical Safety Note
Lifted foot must be placed strictly above or below the knee joint, never directly on the lateral aspect of the knee.

All asanas should be practised with breath awareness, gradual progression, and — where possible — under the guidance of a qualified teacher. If you have any injury, medical condition, are pregnant, or are new to yoga, please consult a qualified instructor before attempting this pose.
